The
ECO's PlanThis document describes the plan developed by the ECO for taking control of the building. Note that it isn't complete.
It is not realistic to plan for every possible contingency, and since the Plaza building is directly connected to other buildings, the possibility exits that some of the designated evacuation routes and areas may be unavailable. The general principle of evacuating the building is to get people away from the source of danger. Since our building is cut into the hillside, this means the Plaza area is not away - it is the roof of some of the building! Keep alert when trying to marshall evacuees - make sure you have them in a safe area.
This document contains the obvious evacuation routes. Note that a fire in a specific place may render some of the "shortest paths" useless. If there is an incident the Chief Warden should advise you via the WIP phone and via the PA system of areas to be avoided. In these cases there may be large numbers of people trying to exit down narrow stairs (Flentje holds 310 people). A very small amount of smoke will cause panic
There are two stairways which span most of the levels: the main stairway and the one which exits in the staff club and the loading bay. Neither of these are fire stairs - they have no smoke or fire barriers isolating them from the rest of the building. Do not be fooled by the presence of fire doors at level-1 and level-3 into the rear stairway - there is nothing at level-2!
The nearest "safe" area here is the area between the Mathematics building and the Union Hall building. There are four exits from the building here - the main entrance adjacent to the Horace Lamb Theatre, the entrance next to the Substation, the "staff only" doorway into the computer science area and the loading bay.
Counselling Centre: Out the main doorway.
Horace Lamb Theatre: Out the main doorway. Can also exit the back of the theatre and then down the stairs to emerge next to the substation. This is a relatively narrow stairway - caution is needed. Evacuation of the theatre will require at least two personnel.
Medical Centre: Out the main doorway.
Computer Science Teaching Labs: Out the main doorway. The "deeper" labs may be evacuated via the loading bay and the "staff only" door, but students will not know how to get there and will therefore require guidance.
Computer Science Staff Offices: Either loading bay or "staff only" door.
The nearest "safe" area here is the area between the Mathematics building and the Union Hall building. There are no exits on this level, evacuees should proceed to level 1 exits: the main entrance adjacent to the Horace Lamb Theatre, the entrance next to the Substation, the "staff only" doorway into the computer science area and the loading bay.
Flentje Theatre: Down the main stairway to level 1 and then out the main doorway (caution - Horace Lamb evacuees will cause a jam at the exit). Can also proceed to the rear entrance of the Horace Lamb theatre and thence down the stairs to the exit by the substation. This is narrow - extreme caution. Evacuation will need at least two personnel - most students will not know the route via the Horace Lamb.
Horace Lamb Theatre: (Upper level) Out the rear doors and down the stairs. Narrow - use caution.
Computer Science Office area: back stair to loading bay (Narrow).
Computer Science Teaching Lab (room 2064): Down the main stairway and out the main door (evacuees from Flentje and Horace Lamb may cause a jam - up might be better). The rear stair to the loading bay is also possible, but will carry fewer people.
Computer Science Teaching Labs (end of corridor): Main door and stair, but the small rear stairway is also possible with care.
Computer Science Honours Labs, Divisional Store: Stair to loading bay.
The nearest "safe" area is Goodman Crescent. The official assembly point is the Plaza, but this is the roof of a building and may not be safe.
Flentje Theatre: Up the stairs. Also across the walkway to the annexe, down the stair and out the main doors by the Horace Lamb. This route is narrow and steep.
Polygon Theatre: As for the Flentje. Also possible via the Building Science Labs.
Computer Science: Down the rear stairs to the loading bay, also up the main stairs.
...architecture to advise...
...ditto...
Clearly, there is work to be done here.
