Professional

Teaching

I teach at all levels and over a broad range of topics in Computer Science. Subjects I am teaching in 1997 include: Computer Science I, Computer Networks, Compiler Construction, Computer Architecture and Software Engineering. If you are reading this to get some information about courses, you probably better follow this link.

Research

My primary research interests are broadly focussed on concurrent and distributed systems. Of specific interest to me within this broad area are mechanisms for software re-use and communication mechanisms. I also have a long standing interest in computer networks. I am a member of the Distributed High Performance Computing Project (DHPC) - part of the Research Data Networks CRC (RDN-CRC). Within this project, I am working toward a distributed processing environment for high performance processing of large data sets (Peta-byte size order). The DHPC project currently consumes 150% of my research budget.

Professional Development Courses

In addition to teaching in the usual undergraduate/graduate teaching programme, I also deliver professional development courses via the Department's consulting arm: the Centre for Computer Systems and Software Engineering (CCSSE). Courses I deliver include: Unix Systems administration, C/C++, Object Oriented Design and Advanced Unix programming. I also deliver courses for the University's commercial venture company Camtech.

Consulting

I do contract research/consulting in a wide range of areas, but primarily in: network design and implementation, system design and review, Unix systems' administration and as a reviewer of evidence/expert witness in "computer crimes" cases. Most of this latter work is for either the Australian Federal Police or the Department of Public Prosecutions.

Professional Skills

I have been a Unix system administrator since 1980 and have experience in Level-6, Level-7, Sys III, Unix/32V, BSD 4.1-4.4, System VR{1,2,3,4} Unix. I also have experience as a C, Pascal, Ada, C++ and LISP programmer. I have an active interest in networking systems, was one of the initial 3 designers of AARNet, and continue to work with the implementation of high speed networking systems, both local area and wide area.
