Academic Background

2001

Internet Research Centre (IRC) - Adelaide University

I am currently involved with the IRC in developing a network emulation testbed. It involves the establishment and implementation of a testbed for devloping networking protocols and attaining measurements in a real time sense of network activities. The project has only recently been approved for funding and it is expected to commence In July 2001.

1994 - 2000

Masters of Computer Science

I have completed a Masters Degree in Computer Science majoring in Network/Multimedia. The degree was conferred in December 2000.

Thesis title : Visualisation and Analysis of Real Time Applications on a Simulated Network

Abstract

Real time applications such as Internet Telephony, Video Conferencing and Streaming Movies use a network as their method of delivery. Networks by their nature do not offer a guarantee of timely delivery within the requirements of these applications. Developers of these real-time application are required to develop the applications to be tolerant of network effects such as delay and packet loss whilst maintaining a quality of reproduction. To determine the quality of reproduction given specific network conditions the developers rely on physically constructed networks in which to test their applications and thus are limited by the expense and the size of the networks and their ability to produce the effects required to adequately test their applications. Network simulation is used by network researchers and developers to create simulated networks which allow for extensive, complex networks depicting the same properties as the equivalent physical networks. However, the output of network simulators is typically in the form of quantitative data, such as packet loss, jitter and delay which are not easily translated to the evaluation of sensory based applications such as real time multi-media which are judged/measured on qualitative performance, ie. quality of picture, or quality of sound.

To address the obvious need, a simulation environment was developed that utilises a modified network simulator, called REAL, to produce the quantitative information required by a representative real time application such as multi-media transmission with a series of visualisation components that provide a visual output of how the multi-media content would be affected by the network conditions which the simulation metrics represent. The simulation environment provides a process that simulates the transmission of an MPEG-1 file via a network by using the modified version of REAL. REAL outputs the quantitative information to the visualisation component which then, using a media player, displays the effects on the multi-media content by the effects that occurred during network simulation.
