it took some time,but it is working now. the problems were:
1) lex (which is "flex" under linux was not installed - it is not
intalled by default)
2) similarly, yacc had to be installed.
3) the "ed" -used in the make file- is almost an obselete editor on the
newer linux, (ex or vi should be a better choice), anyway I looked for
it an installed it.
