StarOffice

StarOffice allows you to:

  • Use a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, etc. on Solaris
  • Create, open, print and save Microsoft Office files, such as Word (.DOC) and Excel (.XLS)

Setting up StarOffice:

  1. Run the StarOffice personal config program (this creates all the necessary config files in your home directory) - if you're using the default CS student environment, you'll find the StarOffice set up program under Applications->StarOffice, otherwise, you can run it from /usr/local/staroffice6.0/program/setup
  2. Just click the 'next' button until you're prompted to choose an installation type - Select the 'Standard Workstation Installation'
  3. Click next again to accept the suggested installation location (in your home directory) and select 'yes' when asked if you want to create a new directory
  4. Ignore any warnings or errors associated with ???

If you're using the default CS student environment, you'll find StarOffice under Applications->StarOffice - otherwise you can run it directly from your home directory as staroffice6.0/soffice
