About Honours

What's in an Honours Degree?

Honours Computer Science is normally made up of 6 Honours courses and an individually supervised project. The supervised project lasts the whole year and counts for 40% of the assessment.

In special cases, the Honours course may be spread over two years.

Honours courses

The courses offered in the Honours program vary from year to year, depending on the research interests of the lecturers presenting them. Examples include:

  • Computer Vision
  • Distributed Databases and Data Mining
  • Language Translators
  • Evolutionary Computation
  • Mobile and Wireless Networks

Honours courses are typically smaller and less formal than undergraduate courses. Assessment varies and may include writing reports, assignments, and/or exams.

Honours projects

Projects are taken under the supervision of a member of the lecturing staff, sometimes in association with one of the School's research groups. Students should look at the list of the currently available Honours projects early in the 1st semester of each academic year. This list, while comprehensive, is not exclusive. Students with other ideas for Honours projects are encouraged to discuss their thoughts with potential supervisors.

To complete a Honours Computer Science project a student must:
  • Submit the title of the project and the name of the supervisor to the Honours Coordinator by the end of Week 1 in the first semester of their project.
  • Submit a proposal for the project to the Honours Coordinator by the end of Week 4 in the first semester of the project. This proposal will be circulated within the School. Shortly thereafter, the student will be required to give a 15-minute presentation to the School on the proposed topic. The student will receive feedback on the proposal at the end of the talk.
  • Produce a poster outlining the project's aims and results around the mid-semester break in the last semester of their project. Posters will displayed in the Open Project Day, in which students will get a chance to present their work
  • Submit the final report on their project by the start of Week 13 in the last semester of their project. At least three copies are needed: one for the Honours Coordinator, one for each supervisor, and one for a second reader.

Applying for Honours

Honours is different from other programs in that admission is by invitation only, based on the marks you obtain for your undergraduate courses. Letters of invitation are usually sent in early December for the following year. Questions about admission should be directed to the current Honours Coordinator in the first instance.
