Towards Scalable, Internet-Based RFID Traceability Networks


About the project

PeerTrack is a research project in the School of Computer Science, Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematics Science, at The University of Adelaide. The project aims at developing a novel framework and data model to enable scalable, Internet-Based RFID Traceability Networks.

Focus

RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology enables sensors to efficiently and inexpensively track objects. A recent ITU (International Telecommunication Union) report depicts a scenario of 'Internet of things' - a world in which billions of objects will report their location, identity and history over wireless connections.

The RFID technology has already laid a foundation for the 'Internet of things', however, other research and development thrusts are also required to enable such a pervasive networking world. So we are still facing challenges from many aspects, such as communication protocols, data processing and semantic computing.

This project will develop a Web-based Peer-to-Peer (P2P) system that enables tracking applications to share traceability data efficiently and effectively across independent enterprises in large RFID networks. The result of this project will underpin many innovative applications such as a tracking supply chain for drugs and food safety.
