Course Advisors |
Faculty course advisors are available to advise you on enrolment and changes that you want to make to the courses for which you are enrolled. School course advisors can assist you by providing discipline specific advice such as which electives could be most beneficial for your career aspirations or interests. School course advisors can not give you advice regarding your program requirements. The Information on enrolling, and changing your courses can be found at the University's enrolment site. Forms for degree checks, letters, online enrolment errors, etc can be found on the Faculty's web site. |
If you wish to make an appointment with a school course advisor, please contact the administrative staff at reception. If you wish to make an appointment with a faculty course advisor, please contact the faculty office |

International Student Advisors |
The School has two International Student Advisors, Dr Jiang and Dr Sheng, who are able to provide assistance and advice to international students within Computer Science. |
The International Student Advisors are able to provide you with general support, and understand the difficulties that many international students face in studying in a new country with a different education system. You should see an International Student advisor if you have any concerns or problems in commencing your study, or if you need advice on how best to approach study at the University of Adelaide. |
You should also see an International Student Advisor if you require advice regarding concerns or problems with the Australian University system. This may include unfamiliarity with assessment procedures or course structure, or concerns over how best to communicate with staff members or fellow students |
Personal Mentor |
Each student will be allocated a personal mentor, an academic member of staff who will be able to provide assistance to you throughout your degree program. Your personal mentor will contact you within the first few weeks of starting your degree and arrange a first meeting; after this meeting it is up to you to arrange any further meetings that you require. |

Assessment Coordinator |
The Assessment Coordinator, Dr Nick Falkner, coordinates assessment and examinations for each year level. The role of Assessment Coordinator includes the following: |
- Conducting the Orientation week lecture for each year level, including a general introduction to administrative issues for that year level.
- Convening examiners meetings at the end of each teaching period. No examination results are released until an examiners meeting has considered all results for a particular level. All finalised results are available via Access Adelaide within a day of the examiners meeting. Supplementary examination offers will be available on Access Adelaide as soon as possible after they are made.
- Organisation of exam script viewing
If you have seen your lecturer and they are unable to answer your questions regarding assessment, you should then see the Assessment Coordinator. |
Lecturers |
All teaching and administrative issues related to an individual course are handled by the lecturers teaching that course. Your lecturer should be the person that you see first if you have a question or comment regarding your course. The lecturers will provide you with a copy of the following information in the first two weeks of each course. Additional copies can only be obtained from each course's web site. |
- A course outline
- A list of textbooks
- A list of reference books
- Details of assessment policies and requirements for each course including: choices, deadlines, opportunity for resubmission or supplementary assessment, access to marked exam scripts, etc.
- Details of the University's plaigarism and cheating policies.
- Details of tutorial, practical and consulting support
If you have any queries regarding the assessment of a course you must contact the lecturers of that course. However, exam script viwing will be centrally organised by the School once all results are finalised. |
Lecture class sizes, especially in first year courses, may be very large. Students are expected to listen carefully and take notes with little guidance from the lecturer in identifying what should be recorded. Learning to take good notes will be a new skill for many people. Lectures usually run for 50 minutes, though some last up to 2 hours. Attendance is not usually compulsory or monitored, so you may miss a lecture and no one will notice. However, you will have missed vital information and any handouts distributed at the lecture. If you are sick or have a genuine reason for missing a lecture, see your lecturer to catch up. |

Tutors |
The School has two tutors, Heiko Maurer and David Knight, who are responsible for administering the School's tutorial system. As well as managing the tutorials for courses, Heiko and David provide additional consulting support. Your lecturer will indicate which tutor(s) is/are available for consulting at the start of each course. |
Tutorials are small discussion groups of students lead by a tutor. Students are usually required to attend a number of tutorials throughout a course. Tutorial assignments are often set and may involve a presentation to the group, a written exercise or participation in group discussion. Attendance at tutorials is usually recorded, especially where tutorial participation forms part of the course assessment. |

Practical Supervisors |
You will be expected to complete practical assignments for most of your courses. Some courses will provide practical supervisors, who will be able to provide assistance with problems you may have with your assignment during set laboratory sessions. Your lecturer may also arrange consulting in the Computer Science Consulting Centre to provide additional help. Your lecturer will provide you with information on any consulting or supervision support at the start of each course. |
Students who are unfamiliar with Java can seek help in the Computer Science Learning Centre, where experienced tutors will be able to answer your questions. A timetable of when tutors are available is available on the web site. |
