School of Computer Science

The University of Adelaide Australia

About the School of Computer Science

Computer Science, has a long history at Adelaide University. Formed (as a Department) in the mid 1960s, it is currently one of eight Schools within the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences. It offers high quality undergraduate degrees in Computer Science, and Software Engineering, and contributes to many other degree programmes in mathematics, engineering and other areas.

The School operates an honours programme (4th year for outstanding students intending to enter research, or to gain an advanced qualification), and Masters degrees in Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Innovation & Commercialisation. Our undergraduate offerings include a unique B. Computer Graphics degree reflecting our strength in visual technologies (the Australian Centre for Visual technologies is based within the school).

Our degrees are accredited by the ACS at the Professional level.

The School has a strong research ethos and is internationally prominent in the areas of computer vision, distributed and high performance computing, evolutionary systems, formal methods, and software architectures. There are currently 4 full professors (not including Prof. Mike Brooks who is on leave serving as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research). It enjoys strong links with industry and has attracted considerable competitive research funding. For example, in 2009 the school won two prestigious ARC Discovery Grants and two prestigious (industry-linked) ARC linkage grants. This means that in 2010 the school members hold more than ten prestigious Discovery grants - a remarkable achievement for a school of this size.

The School has recently undergone dramatic growth in its international student complement, both at undergraduate and graduate levels.
